Is That A Hammer Your Pocket?, Or?…
He doesn’t have a pocket, so that “joke” doesn’t work… I’m going to stop right there.
Uh, so this page sees the first appearance of Mikie’s Uncle’s Boyfriend, I guess. I never really thought about it before today. You never see any female Beoples, so…? Anyway. Lloyd appeared pretty often in the comic strips I was drawing in 7th and 8th grade that starred the Beoples. I was going to post examples of the comics, but just go re-read some early 80s Garfield strips. That’s where I stole most of the gags for it from. Look, I was young and stupid, and most of my classmates were too busy riding motorbikes and hunting small animals to bother picking up a book. I was pretty much left to my own interpretations of things like Copyright Law.
So, in that Prequel Story I keep mentioning, I’d planned that Lloyd was driven a little bit crazy by the transition from the Beople Homeworld to Levi’s World. His behavior here is reminiscent of that, and it was supposed to be like this “Wow, look… he planned this from the beginning” type of moment for anyone who read that later… Of course, I never actually DREW that story, so you get NO payoff. <fart sound>
I’m not entirely certain WHY he’s holding what appears to be Thor’s Hammer. I know at the time I drew this I hadn’t yet read any of the classic Marvel stuff I love so much today. Trade Paperbacks weren’t really a thing for the longest time, and they had yet to invent the Marvel Essential or Marvel Omnibus. You could get a Masterwork Edition, but those only reprinted like 4 comics for $50. I still don’t know who buys those? They still make ’em too… Gah. I’m rambling.
see you next time. Krause out.
